MDM / BYOD Kickstart Audience
As the mobile devices continue to proliferate the enterprise, a growing number of IT organizations are resorting to BYOD programs. However, this is new territory for IT. In the past IT organizations have typically not had to deal with any other technology that makes them support such a disparate set of devices and apps. MDM solutions offer the solution to this problem but come with their own set of challenges. Organizations are struggling with challenges related to acceptable use, data privacy, device ownership, expense models, device monitoring and other device management challenges, our BYOD and MDM strategy services may be place.
BYOD and MDM strategy services focus on understanding these challenges in the context of the size of the organization and on coming up with a plan to implement these BYOD strategies.
MDM / BYOD Kickstart Approach
With these components as the backdrop for a BYOD strategy we go though a process that is unique in many ways. Each step of this methodology has been carefully crafted and has a set of well defined activities associated with it. However, we take into account the unique needs of each situation to tailor this methodology for each engagement.
The typical steps are outlined below:
This is the first step of the process and this is where understanding of the goals of the organization is established. In this process the envisioned mobile scenarios for the various stakeholders are documented. These form the basis of the mobile demand. This process assumes that some level of mobility related innovation has already been conducted in the organization. For the purposes of this process, this analysis focuses on understanding the actors, data requirements, mobility requirements, high-level functionality, and security requirements for the solution.
Assessment, Risk Analysis and Standards
This step of our process focuses on defining the current state of maturity of the IT organization as well as the areas that need to be improved. Along with this a comprehensive analysis of the risk profile of the envisioned mobile use cases is conducted. In this step, existing policies and procedures related to the support of the mobile infrastructure is conducted
A maturity assessment of the readiness of the organization is conducted. This assessment spans various technical areas and not only provides a maturity ranking but also allows for a deeper examination of different mobile related areas. Leveraging the Mobile Maturity Framework (Mobile Ranking and Mobile Report Card), Propelics can identify the areas of focus for the future.
An assessment to determine the risk profile associated with mobile use cases is conducted through the use of the risk analysis tool. The risk analysis looks at the various types of corporate data assets being leveraged and the impact from a potential compromise of any of these assets. The risk associated with various use cases is categorized into Trusted, Semi-Trusted, Untrusted and Restricted. Based on the risk profile, Propelics can help created specific strategies to mitigate the risk.
Based on the envisioned use and the acceptable risk, a policy characteristic framework is designed. This framework provides the various policies for each category of use cases identified as part of the risk analysis.
Vendor Selection Framework
Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Telecom Expense Management (TEM) are two types of platforms that are needed for a effective BYOD strategy. There are various flavors of solutions that are available and need to be considered. A framework that is tailored to the organizations needs is provided. This framework is used in later stages to select the right providers of these types of solutions.
As policies, procedures and standards related to mobile adoption vary from organization to organization, it can be a challenge in understanding the pros and cons of the various approaches. Propelics lays out the various options that can be considered for each aspect of the technical environment for an organization.
Roadmap and Next Steps
The BYOD and MDM strategy concludes with the generation of actionable steps in the form of a BYOD Roadmap. The roadmap specifies all the tactics in priority order. The priorities are established by conducting a ranking of value, readiness and cost. The roadmap also outlines the phases in which the mobile roadmap needs to unfold. The level of specificity associated with the phases, the recommended activities for each phase along with the estimates for timelines, resources and cost combine to create a very actionable strategy.
Vendor and Platform Selection
With the strategy in place, Propelics can assist in the selection of the provider for the MDM and TEM solution. Propelics offers these services as a turn key solution or can serve in a advisory capacity.
