Reexamining Business Processes for a Successful Enterprise Mobile App

Mobile apps are so prevalent in our day to day lives, we are no longer awed by the social sea change that’s transpired. From communicating to finding rides to shopping, banking, and ordering food, consumers can now find an app to accomplish any daily task imaginable. Given this new normalization of mobile technology, in an attempt to accommodate user demand, companies understandably feel obligated to jump on the bandwagon and adapt their business processes to a mobile friendly environment. But such a move should never be pursued in haste. Because while there are of course countless strong cases for streamlining business processes through mobile, enterprise mobile app success means reexamining business processes, by definition. The first order of business for any company wishing to adopt mobile technology is to ensure that developing an enterprise mobile app will improve the company and provide real value.

In fact, determining if your current business practices are in need of change is critical before implementing a mobile approach (but if you’re reading this blog post, it’s a sure bet you already suspect they are). To ensure a successful approach, companies must analyze a number of relevant areas, including (but not limited to): pain points, cost/benefit of developing a mobile app, project timelines, training, and adoption before they can articulate with confidence how such a project would benefit the company overall.

The first step for companies looking to develop a mobile app is understanding the current processes and identifying the pain points employees currently face. Doing so will give you some insight into how the app should function as well as indicate if there are enough items to justify building an app in the first place. Further, enumerating and ranking pain points also makes for an easier transition for business teams once you finally start developing the app.

The next step is to create a mobile app cost/benefit analysis. Estimate just how much your pain points are costing the company vs. the added benefit that would come as a direct result of an app. This may be in terms of time savings, accuracy/security of information, and data tracking and trend analysis. If after consulting employees the company decides it would be valuable to pursue the development of a mobile app then the next step is to begin planning how long the project will take. Developing an app is highly time consuming—especially when functionality and systems integration are complex in nature. One of the most important steps for the planned development of an application is properly outlining how much time the project will take and the resources that are necessary to ensure a successful delivery of the envisioned project.
